The concept is simple: nets provided by the company Infrastruct have been or will be installed at the end of various storm outlets in six municipalities along the Richelieu and St. Lawrence rivers. During heavy rain episodes, water flows through these outlets and the waste found in the water will remain trapped in the nets, which will eventually be emptied by municipal employees.

If the nets in place since June must limit the number of litter that will end up in the Richelieu, the avowed goal of Nature-Action Quebec is above all to use this project to make the population aware of harmless actions that could make the difference. “At the same time, we are carrying out an awareness campaign. We are going to use what we find in the nets to show people that their waste can reach their river if they do not dispose of it in the right way, ”continues Ms. Berestovoy.

“Our goal is not to capture everything that could end up in the river, but to get people to make sure that nothing ends up in the water. It is a pilot project and other nets could be set, but ultimately our goal is that nothing is found in the nets, ”she adds. Nature-Action Quebec hopes in particular to see the disappearance as much as possible of single-use products, which are found in large numbers in our waterways.

Paula Berestovoy comments that the municipalities participating in the project “Zero waste nets - Acting at the source” were not difficult to convince, on the contrary. “We are talking about riverside towns that already have the enhancement of the Richelieu at heart. It's also very attractive to be able to participate in a first like this, so they were super easy to approach! "

In Otterburn Park, one of the cities participating in the project, it is confirmed that the installation of the famous nets by the Municipality's blue collar workers in collaboration with Nature-Action Québec went well. We are now waiting to see the concrete effect of the pilot project over the coming months.
